Vicky Cutroneo
Board of Education
The People's Voice is pleased to announce our endorsement of Vicky Cutroneo for Howard County Board of Education to The Ethics Ballot. Vicky has been an extraordinarily effective civic leader for our County. Her discovery of mold problems in the Howard County Public School System helped to lead a countywide effort to bring more transparency and accountability in health issues for our students. She was also instrumental in shedding light on Public Information Act issues with the School System, participating on committees to improve School System policies, and gathering data to assist with addressing the achievement gap and suspension disparities.
Vicky was elected as President of the Howard County PTA Council, and continued her advocacy for the HCPSS after her 2016 Board of Education campaign, where she succeeded past the primary. With no current incumbents running this year, and the remaining Board Members all new since 2016, Vicky will help retain an institutional knowledge base on the Board. We look forward to working with Vicky on her campaign. For more information, see her website at www.Vicky4BOE.com.
Danny Mackey
Board of Education
The People's Voice is pleased to announce our endorsement of Danny Mackey for Howard County Board of Education to The Ethics Ballot. The People’s Voice has followed the advocacy of Danny Mackey, regarding the HCPSS, for years. He has testified regarding many important issues and concerns about prior leadership, has suggested life skills curriculum additions, and championed causes to assist teachers. We are pleased to be endorsing someone with such a breadth of knowledge and understanding of the issues.
A 2012 HCPSS graduate, Danny was raised in Howard County and attended Northfield Elementary, Dunloggin Middle and Wilde Lake High schools before going on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park. His experience in construction management is indispensable with the planned construction of at least one new high school and a new elementary school in the coming years, and many more to follow. Danny’s problem-solving mentality afforded by his background in engineering assists him in producing unique but practical solutions to the complex problems facing our schools.
Mackey, an Eagle Scout, is a natural advocate and the best candidate to help lead HCPSS through a period of rebuilding and growth. As a K-12 product of Howard County Public Schools, Danny's concern for the future of the system that gave him so much is hardwired. Danny is a voice for the students, educators, parents, and residents of Howard County.
In 2016, when the former Superintendent's contract was set to be renewed despite loud community outcry, Danny stood up and demanded transparency and honesty be restored to the Board of Education. He was instrumental in fostering support for some of the strong community members who are now serving the people of Howard County on the Board of Education.
Danny has worked at all levels as an advocate for Howard County students; he has gone into the classroom to educate students on financial literacy, has testified on a wide variety of issues in front of the Board of Education and County Council, and has helped to author legislation in Annapolis to hold local education jurisdictions accountable on indoor air quality and school maintenance.
In his speech at Wilde Lake's graduation in 2012, Danny said "I live under the conviction that we should stand by the ideals we wish to see in the world. It is our voices that give us this strength to stand." In 2018, Danny is excited to start a new chapter by using his voice to campaign, and hopefully govern, on the values of Transparency, Equity, Opportunity, and Responsibility.
